Living History Day

22 February 2025

Back to the 17th century: The Batavia is manned again!

On Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025, the 17th century comes to life at Museum Batavialand. The crew of the Batavia is back, bringing the imposing ship back into 17th-century spheres. Sailors, shipwrights and sea soldiers will walk the deck and show what life on board an East Indiaman was like. A unique opportunity to not only see history, but also experience it!

Cannon shooting

To make the day extra special, the cannon will be fired at the Batavia on Feb. 22 at 1:30 and 3 p.m.! So you get a full 17th-century experience.

Interactive journey into the past

How did they survive the months-long journey to the East? What was on the menu? And how did sailors enjoy themselves on the high seas? The crew will give live demonstrations in period clothing and answer all your questions. Find out who the “bus shooters” were and what their duties on board were. Through the combination of stories, demonstrations and smells and sounds of the ship, you literally step into history.
