Museum Batavialand is undergoing a major transformation in the coming years. Provincial States of Flevoland have approved a large-scale renovation. Historic ships exhibitions and crafts will be brought together in one well-organized museum complex. The current museum will remain open to the public for the time being.
A revamped museum in 2028
The revamp includes a new museum building, a different entrance and a completely new layout. Historic ships and shipwrecks will be on display both inside and outside. In addition, new depots and a conservation area will be built for the maritime archaeological collection.
The iconic Batavia will be landed in 2026 and given a prominent place on the museum grounds.
What can visitors expect?
- Interactive exhibits on Flevoland’s history and maritime archaeology.
- The opportunity to see historic ship crafts up close and sometimes participate in them yourself.
- A renovated outdoor space featuring ships and shipwrecks, including the Batavia and the Seal.
- A water playground for children.
Cooperation and funding
The province of Flevoland, the national government and the municipality of Lelystad are working together on this project. A total of €25 million is being invested in the renewal, with contributions from the State, the province and the municipality. Museum Batavialand itself is contributing through fundraising and a loan.
A museum of national stature
With this renewal, Museum Batavialand aims to grow into a national maritime-archaeological knowledge center. At least 100,000 visitors are expected annually starting in 2028. Located next to Bataviahaven and Batavia Stad, the museum will be a major attraction for cultural tourism.
