Behind the Scenes at Museum Batavialand During Science Weekend

What’s usually hidden behind the doors of an archaeological storage facility? How do you restore centuries-old artifacts? And what was medical care like aboard a 17th-century ship?

During Science Weekend on October 3 and 4, discover the science behind archaeology, shipbuilding, and life at sea at Museum Batavialand.

Take a look inside our storage facilities, discover remarkable archaeological finds, piece together shards yourself at the ArcheoHotspot, and get a glimpse inside the restoration workshop. At the shipyard, you’ll go even further back in time: on Saturday and Sunday, meet the Batavia’s ship’s surgeon and discover how illness and injuries were handled on board. On Saturday, the chaplain will also talk about faith and spiritual life during long sea voyages. You can also experience the impressive cannon firing demonstration.

A weekend full of stories, exploration, and special places that aren’t normally open to the public!

Please note: For the guided tours and workshops at the Heritage Center, there are a maximum of 10 spots available per activity. You can register on the day of the event at the Heritage Center’s reception desk.
