The history of Museum Batavialand: two worlds united

  • Batavia Yard: Founded in 1985 by Willem Vos, the Batavia Yard focused on the reconstruction of historic ships from the Golden Age. The reconstruction of the VOC ship the Batavia was a project completed in 1995 and christened by Queen Beatrix. The shipyard remains a vibrant center for historic shipbuilding and education.
  • Nieuw Land Erfgoedcentrum: This center highlighted Flevoland’s prehistory, the struggle against the water and the ambitious Zuiderzee project. As a museum and archive, it managed a wealth of information about the Netherlands’ youngest province.
  • National Ship Archaeological Depot: Since 2021, Museum Batavialand manages the National Ship Archaeological Depot. This depot houses a unique national collection of approximately 40,000 ship finds, from complete wrecks to shiploads.

The team behind Museum Batavialand

With over 40 employees, 20 participants in work experience programs and more than 160 volunteers, Museum Batavialand is supported by a passionate team. Without them, the traditional shipbuilding, interactive exhibitions and hospitality would not be possible.
