The Shipwreck Concert: Music Brings Shipwrecks to Life

Sunday, October 25, 2026 | 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

What did the music sound like back when ships still sailed the Zuiderzee? On Sunday, October 25, the Camerata de Lely ensemble will take you on a special musical journey through Museum Batavialand. During “The Shipwreck Concert,” centuries-old shipwrecks come to life with music and stories from the era when these ships sailed and were lost at sea.

A Musical Journey Through the Museum

Forget a traditional concert on a single stage! During the Shipwreck Concert, you’ll walk alongside the musicians and a guide through various areas of the museum. At each shipwreck, you’ll hear a piece of music that reflects the era from which the ship originated. This way, you’ll not only discover the history of the ships, but also hear the music from that time.

The route takes you past the Flevowand, the Oorijzer shipwreck from 1826, and the 18th-century Ventjager, among other sights. At the wreck of the Lutina, you’ll discover the remarkable story of the drowned skipper Jan Kissies. The exhibition “BAARDEVOL – Jugs with a Face” and the view of the Batavia are also part of this musical journey of discovery.

Stories you don’t just hear—you experience them

Behind every shipwreck lies a story about the people who were once on board. By bringing music and history together, these stories take on new meaning. The guide tells the story of the ships and their crews, while the musicians bring the atmosphere of the past to life.

The “Wrakkenconcert” will be performed by Camerata de Lely, under the direction of conductor Juho Myllylä.
