Historic Cannon Day

25 April 2026
Cannon Day

On Saturday, April 25, history comes alive at Museum Batavialand. During Historical Cannon Day you will discover how 17th-century cannons worked and what they were used for. Experience it for yourself: no fewer than twenty cannons on shore and on board the Batavia will give two impressive salutes. Nearly 100 cannoners will give demonstrations and tell you all about the use of historical firearms.

The cannons on the Batavia in action

For the first time in a long time, there will be gunfire again from the Batavia, the largest 17th-century reconstruction ship in the world. A special moment, as this is probably the last time you will be able to see the cannons on the ship in operation while it is still in the water.

Twice a grand demonstration

The highlights of the day will take place around noon and 3 pm. Salute shots will be fired back and forth from the dike and from the ship. A powerful spectacle that shows what things were like in the 17th century.

Meet the people behind the artillery

Nearly 100 cannoners bring history to life. In authentic clothing and full of knowledge, they tell about cannons, technology and life on board. There are also interactive educational activities for children, such as setting off a water cannon themselves and Old Dutch games.
