Crafts Weekend at the Batavialand Museum

Experience two days filled with craftsmanship and artistry

On Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28, Museum Batavialand will be celebrating historical crafts. Meet artisans who keep traditional techniques alive and discover how wood, wool, iron, and rope are transformed into unique products. Throughout the shipyard and in the museum, there will be demonstrations, presentations, and activities for all ages. This way, you can experience firsthand how knowledge and skills are passed down from generation to generation.

Watch masters at work

During the Crafts Weekend, you can watch artisans at work. Admire the restoration work on Saturday, see how work is progressing on the Batavia, a bust of Wendela Bicker, and the Waterschip, and discover how sheep’s wool is turned into yarn on a spinning wheel. You can also learn about the art of woodcarving and discover how to tie important knots that were once indispensable on board a ship.

Spinning demonstrations:
at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., and 4:30 p.m.

Try your hand at centuries-old techniques

If you’d like to do more than just watch, you can get hands-on. Learn how to tie knots, try on historical clothing, or take part in a special weaving activity guided by experienced weavers. Using small looms, you’ll create your own piece of fabric, which will be mailed to you afterward.

Weaving Workshop:
10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

On Saturday, you can also forge hearts and nails right in the blacksmith’s shop. It’s a unique opportunity to literally take the craft into your own hands.

Discover the world of weaving

The weaving workshop will be a special highlight this weekend. Admire Jan Pol’s garments on mannequins and view woven fabrics and other textile creations. The exhibition showcases the craftsmanship behind the fabrics that were once used in everyday life.

Would you like to take home a tangible souvenir? The store offers special bags made of hemp cloth and woven fabric, crafted using techniques that reflect the weekend’s crafts. While supplies last.

Come visit and discover how hidden stories come to light at Museum Batavialand. Here, the past isn’t confined behind glass, but lives on in the hands of the people who preserve these crafts.
