World Spinners Day at the Batavialand Museum

20 October 2026
World Spinner Day

On Tuesday, October 20, Museum Batavialand will highlight the centuries-old craft of spinning.

Historical ship flags were made of wool. Before that wool could be woven into flag fabric, it first had to be spun into a thin yet strong thread. This is a specialized craft that requires a great deal of knowledge and experience.

During Spinners’ Day, spinners from Bornerbroek and Zwijndrecht will demonstrate how this is done. They spin wool from Ryeland sheep into thread for the sail-making workshop at Museum Batavialand.

Come by, see the craft up close, and discover just how much work goes into making a historic ship’s flag.
