Lecture: “Sunk half an hour’s walk from Harderwijk”

June 19, 2026 – 3:30 p.m.

On Friday, June 19, 2026, Erfgoedvrienden Flevoland and AWN Flevoland are organizing the lecture “Sunken half an hour from Harderwijk” at Museum Batavialand. Maritime archaeologist Dr. Yftinus van Popta takes visitors into the impressive stories behind shipwrecks and shipping disasters on the former Zuiderzee. Using extraordinary finds and historical research, he shows how personal stories of those on board are brought back to the surface.

For centuries, the Zuiderzee was an important shipping route, but dangerous conditions also caused many shipping disasters. As a result, Flevoland grew to become the largest ship graveyard on land in the world, with more than 400 shipwrecks found. Walk-in starts at 3 p.m. and the lecture begins at 3:30. Due to the limited number of seats, reservations are required at erfgoedvriendenflevoland@gmail.com.
