On October 4, 1985, the keel of the Batavia was laid by Mayor J.P.A. Gruijters of Lelystad. This marked the beginning of a decade-long reconstruction under the direction of shipbuilder Willem Vos. Using traditional techniques, more than 600 young people and volunteers built this impressive mirror-return ship, which today symbolizes historical craftsmanship and cooperation.
