Volunteer gun team

Museum Batavialand is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our cannon team. Every first Saturday of the month something special happens at Museum Batavialand, namely the firing of the cannons on the jetty near the Batavia. The cannoneers, dressed in 17th-century attire, fire replicas of 17th-century artillery, bringing history to life.

What will you do?

Decked out in period clothing, you will help prepare, fire and clean the cannons during demonstrations. As you do this, you will explain and entertain the audience that follows the spectacle with excitement. You ensure that the process goes safely from start to finish.

Who are we looking for?

  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • You have an interest in historic naval artillery.
  • You seem to enjoy giving explanations to visitors.
  • You work well together in a team.
  • You are stress resistant and have an eye for safety.
  • Playing a musical instrument is a plus, but not required.
  • You are available on the1st Saturday afternoon of the month and some Saturdays during school vacations.
  • You are willing to take occasional turns on special occasions.

What do we offer?

An enthusiastic, dyed-in-the-wool team with a sense of humor. You will have an introductory period and gunner’s clothing and ear protection are available. After the shooting we will hold a debriefing over a cup of soup prepared by our ship’s cook

Additional

For this activity you need a gun license and gunpowder permit from Justis and Korpschefstaken, this is subject to specific requirements that we are happy to explain to you in more detail.
