On Saturday, September 27, Museum Batavialand will present for the first time the results of a special study of historic ship flags. These flags are icons of maritime history, but remarkably never before systematically researched.
What to expect.
This research sheds new light on the origin, function and manufacture of flags aboard ships. It is based on rare sources: preserved (trophy) flags from the Rijksmuseum, among others, and historical literature. We show how these flags were once made, what techniques and materials were used, and what role they played at sea. We also take you through the reconstruction process, with all its challenges.
For whom.
This presentation is intended for peers from the world of maritime history, textile conservation and heritage, as well as those interested in learning more about a unique and previously unexposed aspect of our collection.
