Last chance: experience the Batavia in the water

Batavia out of the water

After 30 years at the jetty in Lelystad, the Batavia is leaving the water at the end of this summer. The ship will be prepared for a new place on land. This is an important step in the renewal of Museum Batavialand. Until then, you still have a chance: step aboard while the Batavia is still in the water.

Feel how the ship lives

As long as the Batavia is in the water, the ship moves with the wind and waves. You feel it under your feet. Sometimes you hear the wood creak and notice how big and heavy the ship is. That makes a visit on board different from a visit later on land.

An experience that will soon disappear

Soon the experience will change forever. On land, the Batavia stands higher and becomes more visible from the surroundings. Impressive she will certainly remain. But the gentle swaying, the living wood and the feeling of a ship in the water will not return.

The Batavia remains open, with some modifications

The Batavia will remain visitable until relocation. However, we are preparing the ship for transport. The outer decks, upper deck, deck, merchant cabin, steering area and galleon will remain open while the Batavia is at the jetty. Starting in late June 2026, the gun deck and landing will close. The hold is already closed.

Come before the Batavia sets sail

At the end of the summer of 2026, the Batavia will be towed to Amsterdam. There, the ship will be placed in a dock on a special chair. During the transport and the period in the dock, the Batavia cannot be visited in Museum Batavialand. After the work is completed, the Batavia will return to Lelystad, about 250 meters from its current location. There we will make the ship accessible to visitors again as soon as possible.

Plan your visit to Museum Batavialand

Still want to see the Batavia in the water? Then don’t wait too long. Plan your visit to Museum Batavialand at least before Aug. 10 and experience the Batavia before she goes ashore for good.
