Annual themes
2025 – My Space
Who are you? How do you show yourself? Young people explore their identity in relation to their surroundings – physical and online – using stories from the past, such as the inhabitants of the Swifterbant culture, fishermen on the Zuiderzee and pioneers on new land.
Themes: identity, (digital) visibility, social influences
2026 – Your Space
How do you give space to another? Young people engage in dialogue about migration, diversity and living together. What do collections tell us about meeting, leaving and coming home?
Themes: inclusion, cultural diversity, living together
2027 – Our Space
What makes a society livable? Young people look at the design of Flevoland and work with community partners on topics such as housing shortage, sustainability and giving voice to different perspectives.
Themes: living environment, participation, civic engagement
2028 – Future Space
What is your vision of the future for Flevoland? Young people bring all their experiences together in a work of art and public presentation that reveals their vision of a sustainable future.
Themes: climate change, sustainability, future thinking
XL projects and public presentations
Each year ends with a major project in public space: a work of art or performance in which young people showcase what they have discovered, created or learned. These are publicly accessible and are the beating heart of SPACES.
About the museums behind SPACES
Museum Batavialand – Lelystad
At Museum Batavialand you will dive into the extraordinary history of land and water. Here you will discover how Flevoland emerged from the sea, admire ancient shipwrecks and step aboard the Batavia – an impressive VOC ship. At the shipyard you will see craftsmen at work and the past come to life. Museum Batavialand shows how people created, preserved and redesigned space.
M. – Almere
M. makes art and land art available in Flevoland for various generations and in collaboration with partners in the cultural and social field. From our home base in Almere, we transform public spaces, landscapes and various locations into places where art is experienced and felt. Whatever your age, at M. everyone is welcome to discover, experience and be inspired.
Museum Schokland – Schokland
On Schokland, you can feel how the struggle against the water shaped people’s lives for centuries. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this former island in the Zuiderzee tells the story of habitation, departure and resilience. In Museum Schokland you will discover archaeological finds, ancient traces of human presence and the history of a place that had to find space again and again.
