Wrecks and stories – the MaSS program

What remains of a ship that has been at the bottom of the sea for centuries? And more importantly, what story remains hidden underneath? During this lecture our volunteer and maritime heritage enthusiast will tell you about the special program MaSS: a digital treasure chamber in which Dutch shipwrecks worldwide are mapped – and brought to life.

A dead piece of wood becomes a living story

“A wreck without history is a dead piece of wood. History without a wreck is just a story.” With this in mind, MaSS brings wrecks and histories together. Each wreck is built into a virtual ship, complete with information about its type, cargo, crew and voyage. With finds, historical data and modern visualization, a ship is (re)constructed that you can view in 3D.

A four-dimensional puzzle

By not only spatially reconstructing the ship, but also placing it in time – from construction to sinking – MaSS adds a fourth dimension. In doing so, each wreck becomes a living time document. The modern archaeologist is therefore more than a diver or excavator: he is a researcher, storyteller and builder of stories.
