Construction of the Watership

Step into the world of shipbuilding

At Museum Batavialand, a unique piece of maritime history is being rebuilt: an authentic 16th-century water ship. This project brings to life not only the ship itself, but also traditional construction methods. Here people work as they did centuries ago – an experience you won’t find anywhere else.

A ship with a story

The water ship was the most distinctive fishing vessel of the Zuiderzee in the 16th and 17th centuries. These large, heavy ships were perfect for trawling. What made the watership truly special was the bun: a hold filled with water in which the fish caught could be kept alive for several days. This clever design gave the ship its name and played a crucial role in the fishing industry of the time.

Building with passion

The reconstruction of the water ship is an inspiring collaborative project. Volunteers, interns and people who are gaining work experience again work under the guidance of professional masters with extensive experience in historic shipbuilding. From a walkway, you can watch the process up close and enjoy the artisanal details and craftsmanship.
