Freedom Lunch

Freedom Lunch May 5 Museum Batavialand

On May 5, 2026, we celebrate living in freedom. Freedom cannot be taken for granted. That is precisely why on this day we pause to reflect on its value. Museum Batavialand cordially invites everyone to join a free Freedom Lunch at the museum, between 11:30 and 14:00.

Together at the table, together in freedom

Real connection often occurs at the dinner table. At the Freedom Lunch, we bring people together to share stories and reflect on what freedom means to us. Whether you take a seat next to your neighbor, a friend or a stranger, this lunch is all about meeting, conversation and fellowship.

Special conversation cards from the National May 4 and 5 Committee will help get the conversation started. In addition, you can learn more about Flevoland in World War II during a short lecture.

The freedom soup of 2026

This year’s Freedom Soup is made to the recipe of culinary writer and TV presenter Janny van der Heijden. She developed a delicious white soup in reference to the dove of peace, a symbol of peace and hope, to which everyone can add their own color with ingredients and stories at the table.

As Van der Heijden himself says, “The Freedom Soup has to be more than just a soup you sit down to dinner with. It has to stand for something.” And what brings people together more than eating together?

Informational talks

During World War II, the area that is now Flevoland was largely still water, yet of great importance. The Northeast Polder, then still under construction, provided work and hiding places for people in hiding and resistance fighters During short lectures, junior curator Kim Mulder tells about the disruptive world war, which left lasting traces in the carefully planned new land.
