Museum lesson Wrecks and Ships

A journey through the Zuiderzee

Discover what archaeologists can learn from shipwrecks. Students investigate the Ventjager shipwreck at the museum and answer research questions. Then at the shipyard, they experience how ship crafts such as blacksmithing and rope-making were performed.

Museum lesson on the Netherlands and the East India Company

Life in the Golden Age

This lesson takes students back to the time of the VOC. What was life like on board? What crafts were needed to build a ship? After a theory lesson, students work in pairs to answer questions at the shipyard and discover the VOC ship the Batavia.

Museum lesson The stories in the ground

Students dive into the world of archaeology and learn how objects in the ground reveal the past. In small groups, they explore the museum exhibits and get to work with real archaeological finds.

Museum lesson History of Flevoland

From prehistory to polder

This lesson provides an overview of the history of Flevoland. Students work in teams and complete assignments on the themes of Old Land, Water and New Land. For example, they learn about Swifterbant culture, the Zuiderzee and reclamation.

Workshop Knots

Learn ancient maritime techniques

During this workshop, students learn to make different types of knots that used to be vital on board. They make an alleman’s knot, which they may take home as a souvenir.
