At Museum Batavialand, we bring history to life with interactive museum lessons. Students discover the past by doing, exploring and researching. Our experienced museum docents provide an educational and inspiring experience.
Discover what archaeologists can learn from shipwrecks. Students investigate the Ventjager shipwreck at the museum and answer research questions. Then at the shipyard, they experience how ship crafts such as blacksmithing and rope-making were performed.
This lesson takes students back to the time of the VOC. What was life like on board? What crafts were needed to build a ship? After the introduction, students work in pairs to answer questions at the shipyard and discover the VOC ship the Batavia.
Students discover how people lived in the past: from hunters and gatherers to the first farmers. They get to work with real finds and complete assignments about hunting, cooking and bartering. Or they investigate fossil bones of mammoths and Neanderthals.
Within the subject of prehistory, there are two types of lessons:
From Hunter to Farmer (grades 4-8): Research prehistoric artifacts and learn about hunting, cooking and bartering.
Mammoths and Neanderthals (Grades 5-8): Discover fossil bones and prehistoric life in Flevoland.
This lesson provides an overview of the history of Flevoland. Students work in teams and complete assignments on the themes of Old Land, Water and New Land. For example, they learn about Swifterbant culture, the Zuiderzee and reclamation.
Students dive into the world of archaeology and learn how objects in the ground reveal the past. In small groups, they explore the museum exhibits and get to work with real archaeological finds.
