Old Country – Prehistory of Flevoland

Travel back to Flevoland’s prehistory and discover how communities lived in the area we now call Flevoland. Admire masterpieces like an aurochs skull, an updated reconstruction of the Swifterbant man and the skeleton of “Michelle,” and experience how our ancestors made the transition from hunter-gatherer to farmer.

The story of a changing landscape

The Old Land exhibition shows how the area we now call Flevoland developed in prehistoric times. Discover how people and animals lived here thousands of years ago, what they looked like and what they did. Because the area turned into the Zuiderzee after prehistory, numerous prehistoric objects have been exceptionally well preserved in the soil. Thanks to these unique circumstances, Flevoland now offers a wealth of archaeological finds that tell us more about life thousands of years ago.

Highlights of the exhibition

  • The Swifterbantman: An updated facial reconstruction reveals what these prehistoric people looked like. Want to know more about this makeover? Check out the article from NOS.
  • Unique finds: Admire the skeleton of “Michelle,” an aurochs skull and 6200-year-old pottery.
  • From hunter-gatherer to farmer: Discover how the inhabitants of this region adapted to a changing landscape.
