Volunteer image carver

This is where the carvings you see all over the shipyard and ship are made. It is a craft that was important in the seventeenth century. Ships were richly decorated to indicate the important status of the ships and their owners. Many different types of hand tools are needed to perform this beautiful craft.

Volunteer to speak: ”Sculpture carving is an age-old craft! do you, like me, enjoy being creative and working a piece of wood all day. then we are looking for you!”

Department and role

Under the guidance of experienced instructor Tiemen Pasterkamp, you begin by working on basic assignments. Step by step you will expand your knowledge and skills. We ask that you actively engage in conversation with visitors and explain the craft and images of the Batavia, for example. You will participate in guiding public activities such as “head chopping” with children and also occasionally help out in another team during vacation periods.

What do we expect from you?

  • You have some knowledge and experience with woodworking.
  • You will be available at least 1 day a week and 1 day every 4 weeks on weekends. The learning master is only present during the week and therefore the training period will be between Monday and Friday. This in consultation with the learning master.
  • Knowledge about the subjects of Museum Batavialand is most welcome, but we consider interest in these subjects at least as important.
