This is where the wood carvings you see all over the shipyard and on the ship are made. It was an important craft in the seventeenth century. Ships were richly decorated to reflect the high status of the vessels and their owners. Practicing this beautiful craft requires many different types of hand tools.

Department and role
Under the guidance of experienced instructor Tiemen Pasterkamp, you begin by working on basic assignments. Step by step you will expand your knowledge and skills. We ask that you actively engage in conversation with visitors and explain the craft and images of the Batavia, for example. You will participate in guiding public activities such as “head chopping” with children and also occasionally help out in another team during vacation periods.
