Volunteer Forge

The forge at Museum Batavialand is run by a team of enthusiastic volunteers, led by our Master Blacksmith, Wout Hammer. Work includes producing items for the yard store, and blacksmithing with the public.

Volunteer speaking: ”I love turning a piece of iron into a beautiful product, forging nails for the water ship to be built and forging a nail with the visitors.”

Department and role

The volunteer has a passion for metal and the craft of blacksmithing, and enjoys sharing that passion with others. Under the guidance of a teacher, you will perform this at Museum Batavialand, or develop it further depending on your level of knowledge.

In a fire you forge the iron into a beautiful product. With this you will help build the water ship and make products that we sell in our store. You let visitors experience the craft of forging and answer questions. Through your enthusiasm and explanation you will give visitors the ultimate experience of Museum Batavialand.

What do we expect from you?

  • Providing information in an enthusiastic manner to visitors and interactively engaging them in forging.
  • Working on pieces of work to demonstrate to visitors.
  • Ensuring safety.
  • For blacksmithing, you must be fit and strong enough because you work with heavy tools and materials.
  • Your presence according to commitment in a schedule, where sometimes a weekend day, special event or vacation program requires commitment. Of course we do this in consultation.
The apprentice mentor is present from Tuesday to Thursday. The training period will take place on (one of) these days, in consultation with the mentor.
